ANSWERED: Why Doesn’t My 4G Work On My Phone

Problem: 4G (LTE) Isn’t Working

If you’ve recently asked yourself “Why Doesn’t My 4G Work On My Phone?” and you can’t seem to pin point the exact problem. There could be a variety of reasons why it isn’t working the way you expect. I will go through a bunch of different troubleshooting techniques and things to check on your phone to ensure that you cover all bases before throwing your phone (or sim card) in the trash bin.

Why Doesn’t My 4G Work On My Phone?

[the_ad id=”581″]

Do you have compatible hardware?

Yes, 4G requires the following 3 Key Components to work properly:

  1. 4G (LTE) enabled Sim Card – If you’re using an old sim card, you may need to ask your service provider to set you up with a Why Doesn't My 4G Work On My Phone?new, 4G enabled sim card. Depending on the provider company they may, or may not charge you for this.
  2. 4G (LTE) enabled Phone – Not ALL phones work on 4G! If you are not sure whether your mobile device is 4G enabled, visit gsmarea.com … search for your device model …. “expand” the Network row (little down arrow on the right) …. see if it supports 4G (HSDPA/HSPA).
  3. 4G (LTE) enabled mobile data plan – You will have to contact your service provider on this one. Here in Canada, some providers do not offer 4G on lower price plans. You must check with your provider to ensure 4G is enabled on your account/mobile plan.

I have all 3 key components, but still… Why Doesn’t My 4G Work On My Phone?

Enable 4G (LTE) Settings On the Device

Here I will list how to turn 4G (LTE) ON with some of the most popular devices:

  1. iPhone:  Settings >> Mobile Data (Cellular Network)  >> Enable 4G >> Voice & Data
  2. old Samsung: Settings >> Mobile Networks >> Mobile Data >> Network Mode >> Select “LTE/WCDMA/GSM”
  3. new Samsung: Settings >> Connections >> Mobile Networks >> Network Mode >> Select “LTE/WCDMA/GSM”
  4. Huawei: Settings >> More… >> Mobile Network >> Preferred Network Type >> Select “4G/3G/2G”
  5. LG: Settings >> Networks Tab >> Tethering & Networks >> Mobile Networks >> Network Mode >> select “GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto”
  6. Google/Nexus: Settings >> More… >> Cellular Networks >> Preferred Network Type >> Select “4G / 3G / 2G auto”

The above may change slightly depending on manufacturer and carrier software updates, but as you can see they are generally very similar, just use a bit of common sense to search for it if it different from the above list. If all else fails, DM me on Twitter @SillyTechie

All my shit from above is correct, Why Doesn’t My 4G Work On My Phone yet?

Wrong Access Point Name or Internet Profile Setting

If you’ve completed all of the above steps and STILL you’re 4G isn’t working… you may need to consider that your phone does not have the appropriate internet profile settings.

This step is very different for both iPhone and Android … so let’s start with iPhone. Typically this profile is auto-updated when you insert a new sim card and you usually get a prompt that asks you to update carrier settings…. you should click Update.

If again, this does fails to remedy the situation you may have an internet profile set that does not belong to your sim card. This often happens when you switch between carriers with different sim cards.

To delete wrong profiles got to:

Settings >> General >> Profiles >> Tap the One you want to remove

If you do not see “Profiles” it means you do not have ANY internet profiles setup and you may need to contact your service provider to help you install the appropriate internet profile setting as it is different for each carrier.

Androids

Go to Settings >> More… >> Mobile Networks >> APN >> Add APN (+) >> Enter APN Details

If you see no APN profiles here, contact your service provider for the exact APN settings for 4G.

Example Profile:

Name: Fido 4G

APN: ltemobile.apn

Be sure to press “Save APN” and then select the radio button next to the APN to activate it.

If all of the above doesn’t work …. I suggest you find your nearest mobile shop or techie to help you out…. it could be a simple mistake on your part, or as complicated as a broken cellular antenna inside the device.

Have you been in a book store, or maybe just browsing the interwebs and come across a book that you REALLY wanna read, and thought about how you can download free ebooks on your phone? ….because physical books are so bulky and annoying to carry around? Did you think maybe, if I could figure out how to get it onto my phone, that would be sweet!?

ME TOO! I do it all the time and finally I’m here to show you how to download free ebooks on your phone and read them wherever and whenever you want!

Tip: If it only comes in hardcover, it’s likely you will not find a digital copy of the book – tough luck. 🙂

How to Apply Glass Screen Guard Flawlessly

How to apply glass screen guard flawlessly, even if your phone isn’t brand new?

When it comes to mobile phones, the best screen protection is tempered glass. Tempered glass offers the best screen protection for modern phones because it is designed to take the impact on behalf of the screen. What that means for you, is $30 screen guard could save you $200 in screen repairs. Sounds worth it, right?

But what I find most often, is that the average person has a difficult time applying their glass screen guard. They get bubbles all over, dust or hair on the lit part of the screen…or just plain crooked. So how to apply a glass screen guard flawlessly every time?

Required Tools:

  1. Scotch Tape (yes, it must be scotch)
  2. Compressed Air
  3. MicroFiber Cloth
  4. Plastic Pryer (if you don’t have nails)
  5. Good Lighting
  6. Flat, Hard, Clean surface

[the_ad id=”581″]

Step 1:

Place the phone on a clean, dusted hard surface. My preference is to have phone facing the same way that you will hold the screen guard during application (keep reading to understand what this means). Adjust the lighting so that you can see every detail of the phone’s screens (scratches, hairs, dust, etc).

Step 2:

If your phone is not brand new, or does not still have the packaging covering the screen, use the MicroFiber Cloth to clean the screen to perfection. Tilt the light or your head to make sure all debris has been removed from the screen. If you find everything but dust is removed, go to Step 3.

Step 3:

Use the compressed air to blow off the tempered glass guard – blow both sides free of any debris (DO NOT REMOVE THE FILM YET). Use the compressed air to blow off the phone’s screen to be free of any debris.

Step 4:how to apply glass screen guard

Use a 2″ (inch) piece of scotch tape and dab it on the screen to remove any remaining dust, hair or small particles. This is one of the most important tasks. For a perfect application the screen must be absolutely free of debris, this is the most important step of how to apply glass screen guard.

Step 5:

Hold the screen guard film-side down. The film is the removable plastic, this is the side of the screen guard that sticks or adheres to the phone screen.

Hold it in the same alignment as the phone.

Quickly remove the film while holding the screen guard just to the side of the phone (this is to avoid throwing any dust particles onto your freshly cleaned screen)

Step 6:

Quickly align the screen guard to the phone screen. Slowly lower it over the screen and press once in the middle, then let the screen adhere it’s self.

Step 7:

Look for any blemishes. Did any dust get caught underneath? Use this trick to get any dust particles out. Slowly lift the corner where the dust is located (use the plastic pry or your finger nail) – be careful not to scratch the adhesive underneath. With the corner lifted slightly, slip a piece of scotch tape underneath and dab onto the spot where the dust is to remove it, then quickly press the corner back down. Repeat this process until all dust and hairs are removed. Press down the edges for a perfect finish.

Pro Tip: If you phone has an all black screen – turn ON the phone to a while screen so that you can see the outline where the screen guard should align. Turn on the screen while you align the screen guard. Turn off the screen again while you inspect for any trapped dust particles.

And THAT is how to apply glass screen guard flawlessly to any mobile phone. Check out this video I took of my colleague applying a screen guard.

Move WeChat To New Phone – BackUp and Restore WeChat

Need to move WeChat to new phone?! Almost as popular as Whatsapp, but not nearly as easy to move between devices. The other day I spent nearly an hour trying to help my friend transfer WeChat from an old device to a new device.

The support articles on WeChats website for moving chat history from one device to the other doesn’t give you much to go off, especially when it comes to the QR code.

So this prompted me to write this brief tutorial will show you how to move WeChat to a new phone in 12 easy steps (with pictures!)

Begin the Move WeChat to New Phone

First, you must have both the old and the new device available. Next, we need to create a backup or QR code of the WeChat chat history from your old device.

In the bottom-right corner tap on “Me” icon (as seen in the image below) then tap on “Settings”.

[the_ad id=”581″]

WeChat Settings

Next, tap “Chat” in the menu to open the backup or migration settings.

WeChat Backup

Under Chat History, select ‘Chat Log Migration’. This will bring to the section of all chat threads that have the possibility for Backup.

WeChat Chat Log Migration

This picture is obvious, you will go to select the chat history to be transferred to the new device, but you will also notice that you must connect BOTH devices to WiFi, so go ahead and make sure both your devices are connected to WiFi now then select the big green button.
Note: if your WiFi is not functioning, the only other option is to backup through your computer.

Select WeChat History Backup

If you wish to transfer your entire WeChat History to the new device, tap on the ‘Select All’ box in the bottom-left corner. Otherwise select the chats that you wish to back up and then tap on the green ‘Done’ button. Now we move WeChat to new phone…

Select WeChat History

At this point you will see a QR code which is scannable. Fortunately, WeChat has a built-in QR code scanner which you will need to use on your new device. So KEEP THIS SCREEN OPEN!

WeChat QR Code

New Device on WeChat…

Switch over to your new device and open The WeChat App. You will be asked to sign in so make sure you know your User ID and password.

Okay, so maybe my steps in the images aren’t in order, but the images are… so just keep following along. Once you’ve signed in, you will tap on the ‘+’ in the top-right corner then tap ‘Scan QR Code’ from the menu.

WeChat QR Scanner

Line up your WeChat QR code scanner with the QR code on your OLD phone.

[the_ad id=”581″]

Scan QR code on WeChat

WeChat will briefly load your chat history on your new phone. Remember, this will only work if you are connected to WiFi.

Move WeChat to New Phone

When WeChat is finished importing your old Chat History, you will see a ‘done’ button and you’re WeChat has now been restored onto your new phone! You just completed the guide, Move WeChat to new Phone.

Turn Off Retail Mode On Samsung Galaxy S7 S7 Edge

I have put together this tutorial so help retail representatives truly demonstrate the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 edge to their customers. I wanted to take our demo phone for a real spin over the weekend while the shop was closed, so I removed retail mode so that I was able to use fast charge and always-on screen. Certainly a wonderful feature which helps to save battery and the wireless fast charger is fun to play around with.

In regards to morality of removing retail mode for lost & stolen phones, to the thieves; your mobile device has likely been blacklisted and while you may still be able to use it on WiFi only, you will find that the phone will not activate on any North American network. So hopefully you’re simply a retail rep. So let’s get to it…

Step 1.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Home Screen

From your Home Screen touch the “Apps” icon – it’s in the bottom-right corner.

Step 2.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Samsung Retail

Scroll through your apps and find “Samsung Retail Mode” app ….. not be confused with the “RetailMode” app. Open up Samsung Retail Mode.

Touch “Configuration settings”

Step 3.

Samsung S7 Edge Admin Password

Enter the password: 5444 and touch OK. This will unlock the admin menu we need.

[the_ad id=”581″]

Step 4.

Samsung S6 Edge Disable Factory Reset

Now turn OFF “disable the factory data reset”.

Step 5.

Galaxy S7 Edge Retail Password

Enter the following admin password M729Q16K8546 and touch OK. Now you will be prompted to Factory Reset the phone. It is the final step to turning of the Retail Mode on your Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

GS6 Edge Retail Factory Reset

All demo contacts, photos, text messages and other preloaded content will be lost, but you will be able to demonstrate always on screen. You may also adjust the retail demo mode to play only during certain times of the day, or on certain days, but the only true way to turn off retail mode is to do the factory reset.

Should I Update My Sony Z3 To Lollipop?

So you finally got yourself a Sony Z3 and you absolutely love its vivid HD screen, stereo speakers and wicked battery life. You’re completely content with how your mobile device is performing and you don’t want to ruin that by updating to a possibly buggy, new OS (aka Lollipop).

Well, I’m here to show you every step of the upgrade process so that you know exactly what to expect, and possibly if you’d rather stay on KitKat.

I will tell you the one and only thing that bothers me about the update; if you have a security password or pattern on your device, when you wake the screen you must first swipe then enter the security protection.. This is different from KitKat in the sense that you only needed to wake the screen then enter the security protection.

See below for details on what to expect and photos of the new interface.

This is quite obviously showing you the download and install prompts.

Keep in mind, the file size is about 600MB so make sure you have a good WiFi connection, at least 50% battery life, and I recommend giving yourself a solid 45 minutes of time to finish the whole process.

You’re done! Now time to enjoy the new interface. Here’s a few shots to show you what to expect:

phone mount for sony xperia z3

Have you updated your Rogers Sony Z3 to Lollipop yet? Connect with me on Twitter and let me know what you think. What are you happy about, what do you think needs improvement? For myself, I think it was worth the wait and Sony did a fantastic job with the update. Haven’t even come across any bugs yet myself. Like I said earlier, the only thing that bothers me is having to swipe on the lock screen before entering the password.

For those hardcore Sony lovers who like to take their device everywhere. I’ve recently started using this awesome mount by New Chance. It has a heavy duty clip that can essentially clip to anything and the wire/coil is super flexible and moveable so you can create a mount for any situation. So far I have used it clipped to my bed headboard (for lazy days), clipped it to my car dash so that I can have a truly hands-free driving experience but still enjoy my music and gps features … and I have even used it as a photography stand. Just moulded it into a stand and sat it on the grass to take the photo below:

How to Turn Off Retail Mode Samsung Galaxy S6 S6 Edge

It’s likely you’re a retail store representative if you’re reading this article. Perhaps you want to take the phone and use it for yourself, or perhaps you want to truly demo the phone to your clients. Me, I wanted a true test of the fast charging of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge and with the retail mode on it would only charge 1% per minute. Not exactly the same awesome speed that Samsung promised which is 40% in only 10 minutes!

If you’re looking up this tutorial because you’ve stolen the retail demo unit, well there’s not much I can do about that, but in most cases you’ll be sad to hear that the majority of the units are WiFi-Only which means they cannot be activated onto a mobile network. This alone sets my mind at ease for posting this tutorial.

Step 1.

The Best in Android Wear Clothing

Recently I visited Maya Riviera, Mexico and a small shop that carried a few great t-shirt designs that I absolutely fell in love with. The one I purchased pictured the android logo eating the apple logo. As an avid Android user and Google product advocate I thought, why isn’t this stuff everywhere?

So I’ve gone on a mission to compile some of the best Android wear available for purchase and share it with you. I have found the following items to come in a nice variety of colors, but also to fit well and comfortably.

I have a small obsession with Google’s Android and so I decided that my new go-to comfy sweater should be a sweet new hoody and I swear, I looked everywhere for the right one. (the one I had before then was all stained an grungy and my mother told me I looked like a bum, pffftt) Then I came across this bad boy with the android robot eating an apple and at first I smiled from ear to ear, then decided this is exactly my kind of swag. I know that you can get it in a variety of different colors if you buy it online.

Now it’s not that I am an Apple hater or anything, but I just think the concept is hilarious because I find that most Android users are typically open to Apple products, but the opposite is not necessarily true.

If you’re shopping for summer and you want to get REALLY intense with your ‘droid love and apple hatred, this gruesome t-shirt is definitely for you.

[the_ad id=”581″]

And perhaps you’re a genius with the Android OS and you’ve got multiple droids, rooted, running different ROMs and well, basically you’re a superhero. This super hero android tee is what you need to add to your permanent wardrobe…I know, I have.

Okay, so now that I’m somewhat of your personal stylist, I think that we need to accessorize. If you’re obsessed with Android and want to really kick your Android wear into full geek slash android die-hard, you’ve got to accessorize with an Android Glow in the Dark Keychain and an Android Cell Phone Charm. And let’s not forget these super awesome new Smart Watch for Android Phones which actually lets you check email, Facebook and text messages right from your watch!
I know some people don’t like the plastic/silicon wrist bands that come with these watches, which is why I like this one because you can swap it out for other wrist bands like PU leather and other colors.

Wow, we’ve really gone overboard here. Or have we? Who cares, I love this stuff! And I want other Android lovers to approach me while I’m out and about rocking my Android wear gear so I bought one of these sweet portable speakers. I find that if I’m playing some really cool music from this little Droid speaker, at least one person always stops to comment. So much for being an introverted geek.

Leave me some feedback on these items and what you think about them.

Top 5 Pick Android Quad Core Phones

What is a “quad core”?

When we refer to and android quad core phone, we are talking about a mobile phone that has 4 processors in it. What does this mean? When it comes to any computerized device such as a mobile phone, a processor is required in order to process the sets of information needed to perform properly. So when we have 4 processors on board, it means that our device can process 4 sets of different instructions at one time. This greatly increases the speed of our device because we do not have to wait as long for each set of information to be processed one at a time.

So here are my top 5 picks for the newest android quad core phones as of May 2014:
